Fractal Masks

"Fractal Masks" is a one-color woodcut completed in May of 1995, as a limited edition of 35 prints. The woodcut is the printing technique Escher employed most often.The concept of fractals as such was not known in Escher's time; however, Escher's "infinity limit" drawings exhibit the sort of self similarity that characterizes fractals (see, e.g. "Heaven and Hell" of 1960, "Square Limit" of 1964, and "Circle Limit III" of 1959). As with "Fractal Serpents", "Fractal Masks" can be seen as a finite portion of an infinite tessellation.
